Copyright policy

Effective 2026-11-05. All legal pages

In short

If you believe a file stored through our API infringes your copyright, email a notice with the details listed here to our copyright mailbox. Most results are never stored, and stored ones are deleted soon after their download link expires 3 hours after creation, so there may be nothing left to remove. A customer whose file is removed can send a counter-notice. We close the accounts of repeat infringers.

This summary is for convenience. The full text below is what applies.

Zeel Shekhaliya responds to notices of claimed copyright infringement. We use the form of notice and counter-notice that the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512, describes, wherever you are. This policy is part of our Terms of Service.

What we store, and for how long

The Service converts files that customers send to the API. By default the converted file is returned in the API response and we do not store it.

We store a converted file only when a customer sets StoreFile=true on a request. The file is then available at a download link that contains /v2/d/, and only to people who have that link. We do not list, publish or index stored files. The link expires 3 hours after it is created, and a cleanup job that runs every 15 minutes deletes files whose links have expired. The customer can also delete the file sooner.

By the time a notice reaches us, the file it names may already be deleted. We still read every notice we receive, and we will tell you what we found.

Where to send a notice

Send copyright notices and counter-notices by email to copyright@pdfconversionapi.com. The service provider is Zeel Shekhaliya, an individual based in Surat, Gujarat, India. That mailbox handles copyright matters only; the addresses for other requests are at the end of this page.

Sending a notice of infringement

Your notice must be in writing and include all of the following (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):

  1. A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act for the owner of the copyright.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you believe was infringed. If the notice covers several works, a representative list of them.
  3. Identification of the material you believe is infringing, with enough information for us to find it. For a stored file, send the full download link. If you have the request ID from the x-request-id response header, include it too.
  4. Your contact details: name, postal address, telephone number and email address.
  5. A statement that you have a good faith belief that the use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act for the owner of the copyright.

If a notice leaves out required information, we may not be able to act on it. If it identifies the work, the material and how to reach you, we will contact you to ask for the rest.

Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing can be liable for damages, including costs and attorneys' fees. If you are not sure whether a use is infringing, for example because it may be fair use, consider getting legal advice before you send a notice.

What we do with a valid notice

  1. We remove or disable access to the material promptly, if it still exists. In practice this means deleting the stored file.
  2. We take reasonable steps to tell the customer whose account stored the file, if we can identify that account, and send them a copy of the notice. The copy may include your name and contact details, so that the customer can respond to you or send a counter-notice.
  3. We keep a record of the notice, which we use to apply our repeat infringer policy.

Sending a counter-notice

If you are our customer and you believe a file was removed by mistake or because it was misidentified, you can send a counter-notice to copyright@pdfconversionapi.com. It must include all of the following (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)):

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed or disabled, and the location where it appeared before removal (the download link).
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district where your address is, or, if your address is outside the United States, of any judicial district in which Zeel Shekhaliya may be found, and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or that person's agent.

When we receive a valid counter-notice, we promptly send a copy to the person who sent the original notice and tell them that the material may be restored in 10 business days. Unless that person tells us that they have filed a court action to stop the alleged infringement, we restore the material, or stop disabling access to it, between 10 and 14 business days after we received the counter-notice.

Removed files usually cannot be restored. We delete them rather than hide them, and a stored file's download link expires 3 hours after it is created in any case. When we cannot restore a file, we will tell you, forward your counter-notice to the person who sent the original notice as described above, and record the notice as disputed. You can convert the original file again at any time.

Repeat infringers

We close, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of customers who repeatedly infringe copyright (17 U.S.C. § 512(i)).

  • A notice counts against an account when it is valid, has not been withdrawn, and has not been answered by a valid counter-notice.
  • An account with three notices that count against it in any 12-month period is a repeat infringer. We disable its API keys and close the account.
  • We may close an account after fewer notices when the infringement is clear and deliberate.
  • We may refuse a new account to anyone whose account we closed under this policy.

Our own website

The same process applies to material on our website, pdfconversionapi.com. Send notices about it to copyright@pdfconversionapi.com as well.
