DOTX to TIFF API

POST /v2/convert/dotx/to/tiff returns one TIFF per template page, stored without compression. The sample asks for ColorSpace=monochrome at ImageResolution=72: a 595 × 841 page in which every pixel is pure black or white, 500,593 bytes.

Parameters

Send these as form fields next to the file. Names are case-insensitive. If you set one of the documented options below that we don't support yet, the request fails with a 400 that names it instead of returning a file made without it.

ParameterWhat it does
ColorSpaceenum, default defaultmonochrome thresholds each pixel at mid-gray into black or white and stores one byte per pixel; gray keeps gray levels in one byte; the default and rgb store three (1,501,411 bytes at 72 DPI).Values: default, rgb, gray, monochrome
ImageResolutioninteger, default 150Drawing resolution, written to the TIFF when sent. The A4 page in full color is 6,521,426 bytes at 150 and 1,501,411 at 72.Values: 36–600
ImageWidthintegerWidth in pixels, with height in proportion.Values: 1–20,000
ImageHeightintegerHeight in pixels, with width in proportion.Values: 1–20,000
PageRangestringPages to render from a longer template.Values: e.g. 1, 2-
MultiPageboolean, default falsetrue puts the pages of a longer template into one LZW-compressed TIFF; ConvertAPI does not document it here, so one uncompressed file per page stays the default. The one-page sample comes back unchanged; our two-page handbook sent as a template gave one 11,282-byte file at the sample's settings instead of two of 484,902 bytes.
TransparentColorstringTurn one exact color transparent in color output; this adds a fourth byte per pixel (2,001,810 bytes at 72 DPI).
BackgroundColorstringColor under the unpainted page.
PasswordstringFor an encrypted .dotx.
FileNamestringStem of the file name, before -1.tiff.
StoreFileboolean, default falseLink instead of data, kept for 3 hours.

Not supported yet

Setting one of these to anything but its default returns 400.

OptionWhat to do instead
IncludeMarkuptrue returns 400 "IncludeMarkup is not supported yet for DOTX files".

Also refused when set: UpdateTableOfContents.

What carries over, and what doesn't

Kept

  • Black text, table lines, and the logo's dark brown strokes and lettering, which come out black
  • The resolution tag: 72 pixels per inch in the sample
  • One file per page, named catering-quote-1.tiff

Lost or not yet supported

  • Everything light in monochrome. The gray placeholder text, the peach header fill, the logo's orange loaf and its cream background all turn white, and at 72 DPI thin letter strokes break up.
  • Compression: the TIFF is raw, so the 595 × 841 page takes 500,593 bytes even though it has two values.
  • 1-bit storage. Each pixel is a full byte, so this is not a CCITT Group 4 fax file.
  • The saved date: the DATE field shows the conversion day.

Limits

  • 2,000 pages per request at most.
  • 16,000 pixels per side and 100 million pixels per page.
  • Requests up to 10 MB on the Free plan or 100 MB on paid plans, all files and fields together; 120 seconds per conversion, then 504.

Where teams use it

Fax cover sheets and forms from templates

Fax gateways and some capture systems want black-and-white pages. A .dotx cover sheet sent with ColorSpace=monochrome and around 200 DPI gives two-tone pages; check whether your gateway also needs them packed as 1-bit.

Feeding page images to systems that only take TIFF

Older imaging and workflow software accepts TIFF only. One request per template gives it a page image without a desktop office suite.

Questions

Why did the placeholder text disappear?

Monochrome output turns every pixel at mid-gray or lighter into white. The content control's placeholder is drawn in mid-gray (128, 128, 128) and its smoothed edges are lighter still, so the line after "Prepared for:" is blank at any resolution. Use ColorSpace=gray to keep light text.

Can I get all pages in one multi-page TIFF?

Yes, with MultiPage=true: the pages come back as frames of one TIFF, compressed with LZW. Without it each page is its own uncompressed file, which is what the one-page sample gets either way.

Why is a black-and-white page 500 KB?

Because it is uncompressed and stores one byte per pixel: 595 × 841 is 500,395 bytes of pixels plus the header. A PNG of the same page would be far smaller, so use /v2/convert/dotx/to/png with ColorSpace=monochrome when file size matters.
